The script of the 30-second ad focusing on Herron's experience:
"I'm Roy Herron. As a part-time legislator, I've been tough on crime, forcing jail time for drug dealers and those who prey on children.
I took on the Wall Street banks and the predatory lenders who take advantage of senior citizens and working people.
In Congress, I'll vote to cut the spending and create jobs.
I'm Roy Herron and I approve this message because when it comes to fighting for our children, our seniors and our working families, I won't back down.
(VOICE OVER) Roy Herron for Congress"
On the Record:
- Hard on Drug Dealers. Herron sponsored the Meth-Free Tennessee Act of 2005, which increased penalties for meth makers, reduced access to meth's key ingredients and educated the public about the dangers of methamphetamine abuse. This law reduced the number of meth lab incidents in Tennessee by more than 50 percent. Herron also sponsored legislation to reduce steroid and other drug abuse by athletes in public schools.
- Tough on Drunken Driving. Sen. Herron has sponsored measures to mandate that drunk drivers install ignition interlocks-a device that requires a sober breath in order to start the car. To prevent repeat DUI offenders from getting behind the wheel, Herron proposed legislation to go directly to jail after they are convicted of driving drunk.
- Tough on Child Predators. Herron sponsored a law which has made it easier for law enforcement to gather evidence needed to investigate and prosecute those suspected of sexually abusing minors.
- An Advocate for Victims of Crime. Herron sponsored the Crime Victim Bill of Rights, a constitutional amendment adopted in 1998 which ensures that victims of crime are protected from harassment, compensated for their pain, informed of the release or escape of their offenders, and able to have their voices heard throughout the criminal justice process.
- Herron Protected Consumers in Tennessee from Predatory Lending Practices. Even before the surge of home foreclosures nationwide, Herron sponsored the Tennessee Home Protection Act of 2006 to prohibit predatory lending practices on the subprime market.
