Dresden - The Tennessee Senate has approved a constitutional amendment cosponsored by state Senator and Congressional candidate Roy Herron that will protect the right to hunt and fish for future generations.
The State Senate on Thursday approved legislation to put the constitutional amendment before the voters for their approval.
"I have hunted and fished all my life, ever since I was big enough to go with my father, and I have so many memories of special time with my father and my own sons," Herron said. "Some would stop us from hunting and fishing. This constitutional amendment will protect the right to hunt and fish so our children and grandchildren can enjoy these sports for generations to come."
Herron said that he wanted to protect Tennesseans' hunting and fishing rights from those that would seek to greatly restrict or prohibit hunting and fishing. Herron has worked with the lead sponsor, Senator Doug Jackson, for several years to try to provide constitutional protection.
The House of Representatives is expected to consider the legislation later this spring. Its passage would mean voters could vote on the issue in November.
