Roy understands the difficult issues that Tennesseans face, and he is committed to finding long-term, common sense solutions.
Recruit Jobs & Grow the Economy
Roy’s top three priorities for Tennessee are jobs, jobs and jobs. Roy has a proven record of promoting a strong economy and creating job opportunities in the Volunteer State — like the West Tennessee Megasite, Hemlock Semiconductor Plant, and Northwest Tennessee Port Authority and Industrial Park.
Cut Waste and Spending
Roy has balanced budgets for the state of Tennessee and knows Washington can live within its means.
Roy will fight the runaway Washington spending spree by requiring Congress to pay for all new spending. He will fight to stop “earmarks” such as the $150,000 for a traffic light in New York, the $500,000 for the Montana Sheep Institute or $50 million to construct an indoor rainforest in Iowa.
Roy drives a truck with almost 400,000 miles. Roy is tight with his money, and he will be tight with yours.
Put Main Street over Wall Street
The recession is hurting everyone. Roy will fight bailouts for Wall Street fat cats who wrecked our economy, and he will work for the middle class and small businesses, the heart of REAL growth.
Renegotiate Bad Trade Deals To Save Jobs
On his first day in Washington, Roy will file a bill to force the government to renegotiate NAFTA. This and other irresponsible trade agreements have sent more than a million American jobs overseas, hurting working families and devastating our communities.
Improve Education and Our Children’s Future
Good schools are the key to jobs and economic success for our kids and our communities. Roy is committed to strengthening pre-K programs and K-12 education by attracting and rewarding good teachers and increasing access to technology.
Roy will also work to increase access to colleges and universities and ensure opportunities for those who want to pursue vocational or technical training.
Cut Spending

He will fight to stop “earmarks” such as the $150,000 for a traffic light in New York, the $500,000 for the Montana Sheep Institute or $50 million to construct an indoor rainforest in Iowa. Roy is cheap with his own money and he will be careful in spending yours.
Tax Relief
Roy has voted against a state income tax five times and has repeatedly opposed higher sales tax rates. In Congress, he will fight to hold down taxes for small businesses, seniors and the middle class.
Faithful Tennessean
A former minister, Roy has written three books, including God and Politics: How Can a Christian be in Politics? Roy also wrote the laws that protect prayer in public schools and enable the study of the Bible in school.
Work Ethic
A hard worker, Roy has held more than 1,000 listening meetings, probably more than any Tennessee legislator we know. In 24 years as a state legislator, Roy has missed only one legislative session – the day his youngest son was being born.
Pro-Guns
A lifelong hunter and outdoorsman, Roy has received an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association, along with their past endorsement. He defends our Second Amendment rights and helped pass a state constitutional amendment to protect our rights to hunt and fish.
Health Care Reform
The health care bill was too big, and it fails to contain soaring costs. It needs major improvement, but there are some common-sense measures we can agree on, such as preventing insurance companies from dropping patients with “pre-existing conditions and closing the Medicare D "donut hole" which saves our seniors billions of dollars in prescription drug benefits.
Social Security
Social Security is a promise to our senior citizens. Roy will insist that we keep that promise. Roy opposes privatizing Social Security and gambling the financial future of senior citizens on the unpredictable whims of Wall Street and the swings of fortune in the stock market.” He knows we must cut spending and live within our means if we want to keep Social Security solvent and strong.
Immigration
The first step is to stop illegal immigrants from flooding into our country. Roy believes we need to expand border security and strengthen the role of local law enforcement agencies. Some 14 million illegal immigrants now compete with Americans for jobs at low and even illegal wages.
Safe Communities
Roy is dedicated to making our communities safe. As a part-time citizen legislator, Roy has fought crime and led efforts to crack down on meth and drunk driving. He helped pass the Meth-Free Tennessee Act, which reduced the number of meth lab incidents in Tennessee by over 50 percent.
Herron has also worked not only to fight crime but to protect victims. He sponsored the Crime Victim Bill of Rights, a constitutional amendment which ensures that victims of crime are protected from harassment, compensated for their pain, informed of the release or escape of their offenders, and able to have their voices heard throughout the criminal justice process.
Stopping Nuclear Waste
When an outside company proposed moving 550 jobs from the Milan Army Ammunition Plant to Iowa and converting the Milan arsenal to store depleted uranium nuclear waste, Roy stood up for Tennesseans.
Roy is committed to fighting plans that would make West Tennessee a nuclear waste dump.
